The new Unilever's logo was launched in 2004. This is combined from 25 small icons such as sun, DNA, bee, flower and heart and has U shape.
Each icon has one meaning which related to Unilever’s product – nutrition, hygiene and personal care products- takes care people healthy and beauty.
There is the idea that “a picture is worth a thousand words”, this is right in this case. Unilever is a company that produce and sell products related and necessarily for a normal life and people. They can not show all the ideas of live in one shape to make the logo be seductive. As the result, the combination of 25 symbols is the best way to represent what company want to achieved as well as the product’s message for customer’s benefit.
By using the shape of U stand for “Unilever”, it makes mnemonic value. I like the logo have the identify meaning and in this logo, it is clear to identify.
When I see the logo, I am impressed by the small icon. Then, I know the name of the company, Unilever. It is clear for people do not know what the U stand for. For example, the logo of Nike, because it is too famous so when we see it, we know it is Nike; however, in my rural areas, people see this logo and can not know what it is. It is different with Unilever, making all people familiar with the logo as well as their name.
For the past thirty years, Unilever used this logo which remains the constant, but when starting new mission, ‘adding vitality to life’, the change is necessarily.
We can see the difference between 2 logos. The old is solid from the shape to the normal font. I think it concerned with a factory, not a product.

On the contrary, the new one is more attractive, meaning and open with curve and a little metaphor in each small icon. In addition, the letterform are hand-drawn (I think) is more communication than the old one.

Each icon can stand independently and combined with other will give the different meaning. I went to a Career Day of Unilever and I saw when someone presents, they have a power point which an impress background with the icons has related to their job part. For example, “bee represents creation, pollination, hard work and biodiversity. Bess symbolise both environmental challenges and opportunities.” Marketing department choose bees for their room.
One more example, hand is a symbol of sensitive, care and need. It represented both skin and touch. Flower represents fragrance. When see with the hand, it represents moisturisers or cream.
Although the logo is making up from small icons, it is also clear in small size. I see in my shampoo bottle, Dove, this is very small Unilever’s logo, but all the icons are still very clear.

With me, the thing I like best is 25 icons construct the U shape. This is romance and having flying curve as well as meaning behind each icon. This cover all the materials structure our life.
