Logo color

About the logo’s color, I want to choose a color which represent for stylist (haute couture), unique and show the confident. Do you know Gwen Stefani? I am sure you know her, who is famous with No Doubt (the band she played for the beginning) and “Hollaback girl” last 2 years. I think she has a good choice when combine and advertise her name by a simple, attractive logo with a letter “G”. You can see this clearly in the video clip “the sweet escape” and “Wind it up.” The logo appeared on a lot of thing, the necklace, the guitar, belt, and the logo’s car.
The logo has a gold color which represents for something luxury, wealth, opulence and attractive.
And by using this color for the main color of the clip “The sweet escape”, Gwen Stefani is success with her brand name.
In my mind, I do not like gold color; I think it is flashy and difficult to combine with other color. Especially when combine with black, I has a road sign. ^^''. However, in this case, this is a metal gold which has a metallic shine. I just think about a solid color without shiny effect which is the refection of the material and the light. As the result, the color is not bright.

And now, there is a flourish of using gold. For example, Motorola (V3 DG) (combine with D&G fashion) and Nokia (8800) introduce a gold mobile phone. This is now become a luxury as well as proving high level of user. Parallel with gold is something twinkling such as pearl or diamond.

I think metal gold or silver is both good to make something become splendid. However, with gold, we can see the warm, bright as well as feeling more energy. In addition, gold make us think about gold medal, the first, the winner. Do you think that? The problem is this is difficult to combine gold with other color. I think it is better if we use gold in the same tone from light to dark; or go with silver and brown. If it goes with other color, I think we should make other color become shiny and twinkling like jewel.

When searching about gold, I know that Art Nouveau is known as a good using metallic, shining gold color. This is good example in using metal gold.

As the result of success in using gold, now, I am crazy with this T_T. As the result; I will persuade my group makes a logo with metal gold.

Logo ideas

I have some HAi logo mock up to show you. After discussing with my group, we decide to make a logo which is unique, haute couture and showing the confidence. I like something curve so I use a vine to represent a character of the logo.
Another has an inspiration from a sakura (cherry blossom), Japanese national flower. I make it have a lot of petals with a flower bud is a square to make it different and unique.
I also have the idea from a square which has two small squares in the corner. HAi will parallel with the corner to represent a power.
I have other ideas but it is difficult to explain.
I drew all of them in the paper. I will take the picture of this and show you soon. (my father borrow my camera).

Unilever's logo

This week I have studied about logo so now I analysis the logo I like best based on what I learned.

The new Unilever's logo was launched in 2004. This is combined from 25 small icons such as sun, DNA, bee, flower and heart and has U shape.

Each icon has one meaning which related to Unilever’s product – nutrition, hygiene and personal care products- takes care people healthy and beauty.

There is the idea that “a picture is worth a thousand words”, this is right in this case. Unilever is a company that produce and sell products related and necessarily for a normal life and people. They can not show all the ideas of live in one shape to make the logo be seductive. As the result, the combination of 25 symbols is the best way to represent what company want to achieved as well as the product’s message for customer’s benefit.

By using the shape of U stand for “Unilever”, it makes mnemonic value. I like the logo have the identify meaning and in this logo, it is clear to identify.
When I see the logo, I am impressed by the small icon. Then, I know the name of the company, Unilever. It is clear for people do not know what the U stand for. For example, the logo of Nike, because it is too famous so when we see it, we know it is Nike; however, in my rural areas, people see this logo and can not know what it is. It is different with Unilever, making all people familiar with the logo as well as their name.

For the past thirty years, Unilever used this logo which remains the constant, but when starting new mission, ‘adding vitality to life’, the change is necessarily.

We can see the difference between 2 logos. The old is solid from the shape to the normal font. I think it concerned with a factory, not a product.

On the contrary, the new one is more attractive, meaning and open with curve and a little metaphor in each small icon. In addition, the letterform are hand-drawn (I think) is more communication than the old one.

Each icon can stand independently and combined with other will give the different meaning. I went to a Career Day of Unilever and I saw when someone presents, they have a power point which an impress background with the icons has related to their job part. For example, “bee represents creation, pollination, hard work and biodiversity. Bess symbolise both environmental challenges and opportunities.” Marketing department choose bees for their room.

One more example, hand is a symbol of sensitive, care and need. It represented both skin and touch. Flower represents fragrance. When see with the hand, it represents moisturisers or cream.

Although the logo is making up from small icons, it is also clear in small size. I see in my shampoo bottle, Dove, this is very small Unilever’s logo, but all the icons are still very clear.

With me, the thing I like best is 25 icons construct the U shape. This is romance and having flying curve as well as meaning behind each icon. This cover all the materials structure our life.

The Art Nouveau vs. the Psychedelic design

As we had discussed, design is the way to communicate. To understand clearly, we should know the starting point of the Art Nouveau design style from the turn of the 20th century and the Psychedelic design style of the 1960’s.

First, the Art Nouveau developed during the two decades (1880-1910) that girded the turn of the century. This is the transition from the historicism of the 19th century to the invention of new form with innovation.

In the Art Nouveau design, everything became elegance grace with vine tendrils, flowers, birds (particularly peacocks) and female form. It usually used decorative pattern and ornament.

Art Nouveau graphic designers attempted to make art a part of everyday life. As a result, they created something composition in contour line, black and white shape and a dichotomy of philosophy, lifestyle as well as a social values. The Art Nouveau piece usually had the swirling forms, the flat color, stylized organic contour and decorative patterns. Artist typically used capital letters for their writing and using Gothic and Roman font (I guest). Although it is difficult to read if using Gothic font, the font is consistent with the swirling and curve forms.

It was also influenced the Japanese decorative design and Ukiyo-e (“picture of the floating world”).

This is the time to abstract take form.

If Art Nouveau was toward art and printing, psychedelic design is about public, civil right movement.

The Psychedelic design was seen as solving problems of communication. This period diversified more by cultural and political factors than by these pressures of technical change. Reaction to the Vietnam War, social protest, the Cuban revolution, the women’s liberation movement, mass culture and the use of hallucinatory drugs are all graphic expression. Music is played a main role create the wave of this kind of design; hippie, rock and roll and rock. This kind of loud music brought the freedom environment for artist. As in the poster of Quicksilver Messenger Service concert poster in 1967 below.

The color is brighter, softer and become contrast. But it remained the sinuous curves of art nouveau. This kind of poster (influenced by art nouveau) is illegibility (because letter become image) while protest using clearer and simple font.

At that time, I think photography became the weapon to protest against War because this is the best way to show the truth. For example with Vietnam War protest poster 1970. It showed the massacred Vietnam villagers with a short question and answer, “Q. And babies? A. And babies.”

Today, I think it back to using curve and something romance; for example, Nokia Lamour advertising and the style of Vault49 company (
http://vault49.com/). Moreover, this is also a time for something strong, enthusiasm and brisk. Depend on what theme we chose; there are many ways to using color such as contrast and flat, and font for us to create.

Me. Myself

I like colour and want to play with this. The colour I like best is white. This will be apart of any colour (not light pastel). This is the same with black; other colours stand out black (except pale). When I was 12 year old, my brother asks me the reason why I like white. The answer is the colour is clean and I can not tell any thing more about this. He teased me “white is dirty, it is easy to dirty”. I answer that because it is easy to dirty so you must keep it clean. After that, I know the reason why I like this color: because I want to keep everything clean and I can combine every other color with this.

Designer I like is Vince Frost. The ways he arrange words or colour in poster make them special. He usually uses black, white and red colours. They are contrast and impression. Moreover, in his design, white balance is strange. Something, there seem to be no space in his design such as in the “Design Indaba” Workshop poster. Playing with character is also his job. In “The Director’s Cut” poster, he played with the words Sydney and Dance; connecting them to be a part of each other. It impresses me a lot.

You can go to his website to see clearly.

I want to become a visual designer. I want to make template, theme and mingle color. Everything I do, people can realize that this is my design.
